CPS Unveils High Speed Single Pass UV Digital Inkjet Printer at the SGIA Show
CPS Resources, Inc. jointly with Innovative Digital Systems, LLC
introduces its SP2-100. This is the digital future for printing flat and multi-dimensional parts with one single pass. The technology referred to as marking "on-the-fly" has continuous printing speeds of up to 79' per minute. Printing a lot size of one or multiple logos is as simple as loading the files in your computer, no cliches, no pads. The SP2-100 operates by allowing parts to pass under stationary print heads (CMYK and/or white) on a fixture or conveyor while the inks are laid down. Loading the parts, printing, curing the inks all take place in line. See a Demo at Booth 1347.

DIRECT DIGITAL FLATBED PRINTING
Large format digital printers were traditionally used for wide format flat printed graphics. That is no longer the case. Large format digital printers have evolved and are being used to print products that were predominately decorated using screen printing or pad printing. With the development and advancement of better UV inks systems, a high opacity white and ability to print spot color, digital printing is now able to compete with pad printing and screen printing. The new digital printing technology has opened up many opportunities to print industrial products in high volume, high print resolutions and at speeds that surpass all other processes. Industrial printing has never been easier or more economical.
Pictured below is the BE 1000 UV Printer that has a flatbed of 1600mm x 3100mm and can print up to 500mm (19.685") in height. The BE 1000 UV Printer has a 6 color configuration (yellow, magenta, cyan, black, light magenta, light cyan, with white ink and overprint clear lacquer). It also features double CMYK configuration.

| Variable Data - Printing on Demand Allows personalizing products and changing artwork using only the computer generated artwork directly from laptop to Digital Printer. |
Independent set up of screens, clichés, and plates per design can be costly and time consuming
| No set up time. Can print small runs and large production runs back to back in high quality print. |
Set up of inks, plates, screens is messy and time consuming
| Single color print to multi-color photo quality print can all be done with same printer with no set up | Set up required per color station, costly screens and plates, may require several machines | ||
| High resolution. up to 1200 x 1200 dpi | Up to 300 dpi | ||
| UV inks. No solvents No ink mixing, clean up performed by printer No ink waste Inks in sealed delivery system, contaminate free |
UV inks available for screen printing, UV inks not available for pad printing Inks mixing for every color, manual preparation Ink waste, difficult to estimate exact usage Inks exposed to environment |

| Multiple height printing. Adjustable height, up to 500mm (19.68") takes only seconds to print variable height products. |
Height limitations and timely set up involved for non-flat product. More set up time involved to decorate different product sizes
Case Study
Shown in the photo is an example of a Sony Ericcson mobile phone printed with the BE 1000 UV. The Ed Hardy design was printed on the black base substrate material with a layer of white followed by the 6 colors (cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta, yellow, and black).
This phone housing displays superior print quality on 100% of the surface. This includes printing in and around the bevel and contours of this mobile phone housing. The high-end graphic was created using 600 x 900 dpi with 12 passes. Using UV digital inks was a cost savings over the conventional methods of decorating this product. There was virtually no set up involved other than artwork and template tooling. The UV inks are instantly cured once the part is finished printing it is ready for packaging. Due to the quick turnaround time in bringing this product to market, the success of this project resulted in a higher profit margin and increased sales for this customized product. Direct digital printing was the solution to adding value to this printing project.

UV Printer Capabilities:
The direct digital large format printer works both uni-directional with print capabilities of 6 colors, plus white, plus a UV clear. When working in the bi-directional mode the printer utilizes two sets of four color process inks. The ink drying occurs as the unit scans outward and homeward, thus allowing the printer to move at twice the speed of the uni-directional printing.
The Single Pass Model SP 100 "mark on the fly" technology has enabled a durable high speed photo quality print to be decorated on a wide variety of products. The high quantity high speed surpasses other processes for speed and has better resolution than the traditional pad printing and silk screen methods. The single pass can print industrial production parts upwards of 6000 pieces per hour with 400dpi. With the development of these two distinctive types of digital printers 80% of part decoration can be achieved with these printers.

While the direct digital printer is a sophisticated well run machine, the Rip Software makes the machine very user friendly to operate. Production can be run with one graphic technician and the remainder of the production run with unskilled labor – the machine does all of the work. The person loading does not need to have knowledge of the ink process.
